LEE, N.H. – The streak of hometown winners in the Granite State Pro Stock Series ranks may have ended Friday night, but Corey Bubar started a new streak of his own.
Bubar bested the series’ strongest starting lineup this year to win the Clash on Calef 125 at Lee USA Speedway, taking his second straight GSPSS checkered flag at “New Hampshire’s Center of Speed.”
Polesitter Brandon Barker and Joey Polewarczyk swapped the point in the opening laps, with third-place Bubar leading Dave Farrington, Jr. past their former Beech Ridge Motor Speedway rival. “Joey Pole” was at the point on lap 13 when Anthony Bello and Matt Dow got together on the backstretch, nearly rolling Bello’s car and bringing out the night’s first caution flag.
Bubar launched from the outside to the lead on the restart, shutting the door on Polewarczyk and setting a quick pace around the 3/8-mile oval. As the leaders contended with traffic, seventh-place Gary Smith got out of shape and lost control down the backstretch, bunching up the field with 69 laps to go. A handful of cars pitted for adjustments, trying to find something to put them in Bubar’s class.
Polewarczyk pursued Bubar on the restart, but it was only in traffic that he could chip away at Bubar’s advantage. The two leaders were carving through slower traffic when Bobby Frappier and Andy Shaw got into trouble, slowing the pace at lap 99.
The restart pitted Bubar against Polewarczyk again, but their battle was short-lived as Alex Quarterley met with trouble in turn four, stacking up a few cars as he spun to a stop. The field was re-racked, with Bubar choosing the outside to defend the lead.
Bubar launched on the restart, not only closing the door but locking it behind him as he cruised to his third career GSPSS win and his second straight with the series. The Windham, Me. driver has won the series’ last two races at Lee, dominating last fall’s season-ending Bosowski Properties 150.
Barker, who won June’s $10,000 Keen Parts 150, powered back to second at the finish. Hudson Speedway winner Polewarczyk held on for third at the track where he captured his second GSPSS win back in 2014.
Multi-track champ Dave Farrington, Jr. ran in the front all evening and finished fourth, while veteran Wayne Helliwell, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Evan Beaulieu kept the momentum rolling with a sixth-place finish, ahead of fellow Mainer Josh St. Clair. NASCAR spotter Derek Kneeland, who finished fourth at Lee back in June, made a late rally to finish eighth. Local racer Bobby Baillargeon was ninth, while Ryan Green wheeled Joey Doiron’s car to tenth at the finish.
Casey Call, leading the point standings entering the weekend, was unable to get a new car together in time for Friday’s feature after a hard crash at Speedway 95. The Bernhardt Automotive team generously lent a car to Call’s team, allowing him to take the green flag Friday. However, Beaulieu slipped past in the point standings, taking the lead with three races left on the calendar.
The Granite State Pro Stock Series has a much-needed week off before a visit to Riverside Speedway in Groveton, N.H. Details on the annual visit to “Grovetona” will be released shortly.
