HERMON, Maine. - When the Granite State Pro Stock Series left Lee USA Speedway after the series’ last event in July, Evan Beaulieu’s championship bid looked to have reached its end.

After Saturday night’s showdown at Speedway 95, the Durham, Maine, racer’s title battle is not only intact, but reinvigorated.
Beaulieu dethroned local favorite Mike Hopkins to pick up his second career GSPSS win under the lights, sweeping the season’s two “Vacationland” visits to the Hermon, Maine, third-mile.

Last season’s title runner-up was eliminated in an early crash at Lee, and with the next race on the schedule only days away, Beaulieu and his family team doubted they could have their car repaired in time. However, a schedule change and the subsequent month-long recess gave Beaulieu and fabricator Alan Berry more than enough time to get his car right.

Hopkins, armed with one of his team’s newest chassis, went to the point immediately and set the pace on a long green-flag stretch to open the race. Beaulieu worked his way forward from fifth place. But even as Beaulieu settled into second, he would need a lucky break to challenge Hopkins for the win.
That lucky break came with only 15 laps to go, with the evening’s first yellow flag bunching up the leaders. Beaulieu went to work on Hopkins, shaking free of the hometown ace to put his No. 56 out front for the final laps.

Beaulieu held on to win, taking his second win of the season and becoming the first driver to win multiple times this year with the GSPSS. Beaulieu is also the second driver to sweep Speedway 95, following Hopkins’ two-for-two performance last year.

Hopkins, who did not race at Speedway 95 in June, finished second to record his second straight runner-up GSPSS finish. The veteran racer has not finished outside the top five in a touring race at Speedway 95 since 2015.

Points leader Cole Robie finished third, minimizing his losses in the championship race. Ryan Deane was fourth, while Casey Call finished fifth to secure third in points.

Next up for the Granite State Pro Stock Series is the Keen Parts 150 at Lee USA Speedway this coming Friday, September 19, with a $10,000 winner’s purse up for grabs on the eve of New Hampshire’s big NASCAR weekend.
