Benjamin Adds STAR Classic Win to Championship Run

EPPING, N.H. - Travis Benjamin started the 2023 Granite State Pro Stock Series in Star Speedway’s victory lane. Friday night, he opened the series’ run to the championship in the same place.

The Belfast, Maine, racing veteran scored his third win of 2023 in the Outside Groove Saloon 100, kicking off Star’s 58th Annual Star Classic Weekend and setting the stage for the finale for the GSPSS crown.

A multi-time winner all around New England, Benjamin had not visited victory lane under the GSPSS banner in a handful of starts prior to this season. In May, though, he claimed his first checkered flag with the series at Star, then went back-to-back with his June win at Riverside Speedway. Benjamin had not won since, but consistency had kept him ahead in the standings.

Gabe Brown, the 2021 GSPSS champion, started mid-pack but found his way to the lead with 27 laps to go. Making his first start since last year in a car he sold to Nick Cusack, Brown was threatening for victory when calamity struck on a restart.

Benjamin took command, battling with Petit Motorsports teammate Joey Doiron but coming out on top to bookend the GSPSS’ three appearances this year at “The Place To Race.”

Doiron, the reigning and two-time GSPSS titlist, finished a strong second, repeating the team's top-two sweep from Riverside.

Massachusetts' Ryan Kuhn, who won the night's Evolve Pro Truck Challenge feature, finished third.

With his victory, Benjamin pads his points lead over Brandon Barker with the season finale approaching quickly.

The next race on the GSPSS calendar is the rain-postponed Bosowski Properties 150, now part of Lee USA Speedway’s season-ending Oktoberfest spectacular on October 1, 2023. Details on the GSPSS’ season finale will be forthcoming.
